The father of a 5-year-old New Mexico girl was charged with child abuse causing death after police discovered the girl covered in bruises. Her mother, living in California, couldn't believe the story when the police called her.
A New Mexico man is accused of beating his daughter to death after becoming angry that she stopped doing her homework. Albuquerque police responded to a call for a 5-year-old girl who was unconscious and not breathing.
The girl's father, Brandon Reynolds, 36, watched "emotionless" as paramedics transported his daughter to a nearby hospital before she was declared dead, the complaint alleges.
When officers attempted to find out what happened to the girl, the report alleges Reynolds told them multiple stories, including that he was falling asleep with the girl when her heart stopped beating, according to the report.
Meanwhile, officers interviewed a neighbor who claimed to overhear Reynolds yelling, "'Get up!' followed by sounds of someone or something being struck, which she demonstrated by hitting her couch," the report states. Detectives checked the girl's injuries and noted there was extensive bruising across her back, including "bruising to her right abdomen [which] appeared consistent with the tread from a shoe," according to the report.
"'That's when the discipline came in,'" he allegedly told police, according to the report. "He started with spanking her on her bottom and ended up, 'blacking out.'" An autopsy is pending, according to officials. Neighbors identified the girl as Sarah Dubois-Gilbeau.
