US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is used to being the butt of jokes – being married to a semi-impeached, Big Mac-loving philanderer and suffering from unfortunate sartorial direction will do that to you.
But it’s not the 1990s anymore and Hillary is not that woman anymore. With a stint as senator, a presidential nomination near-miss, and now, three solid years as an effective Secretary of State under her belt, Hillary Clinton is commanding some serious respect. And that, according to Johanna Weiss at The Boston Globe is what the “Texts from Hillary” meme is all about.
“If there was any doubt that Hillary Clinton’s stock is higher than ever — and that losing in 2008 was probably the best thing to happen to her — it’s the hilarious, inescapable ‘Texts from Hillary’ phenomenon,” wrote Weiss.
The whole thing started with a picture of Clinton taken on a plane, wearing a pair of dark sunglasses and peering at her mobile with what could be a look of consternation on her face. Adam Smith, a 29-year-old from the DC area, however, saw the image as photographic evidence of Clinton’s fierceness and so began the Tumblr blog “Texts from Hillary”. As Weiss explained, “Nearly every contribution falls along the same theme: Hillary’s not beleaguered, she’s in charge.”
Whether this will mean anything in 2016 remains to be seen. But for now, Clinton is running things.
