According to the Suez Canal Authority there was an attempted attack on a Panamanian-registered container ship COSCO ASIA, with witnesses claiming they heard two explosions.
The reports state it was a "terrorist" attack that was unsuccessful on Saturday and that the attempt was to disrupt the flow of ships through the Suez Canal waterway which is a key global shipping line secured by armed forces.
Suez Canal Authority Mohab Memish states "One of the terrorist elements has carried out a failed attempt to affect the movement of ships in the Suez Canal by targeting one of the passing ships, Cosco Asia." Memish continues on to say "The attempt failed completely and there was no damage to the ship or the containers it carried. The situation was dealt with strictly by the armed forces."
Three people have been arrested according to an Egyptian army source, saying "they have been dealt with." Reports also indicate the attack included a rocket-propelled grenade and machine gun fire at the container ship.
