Tennis Fashion Fix: Martina Hingis & Tonic

By Kselz @TennisFixation

One of the great things about my complete fixation with tennis is how many tennis pros I’ve gotten to meet. They are almost always super nice and completely accessible. And Martina Hingis is both of these things.

Martina Hingis Tennis Express

This week, I was lucky enough to meet her at an event held at Tennis Express featuring a new line of tennis wear that Martina wears and helped design for fitness apparel manufacturer Tonic. If you’re not familiar with Tonic, I wasn’t either. They’re based in Canada and, up to now, had been putting out some fairly beautiful yoga wear.  But Martina approached them about doing a tennis line and I have to say, lucky for Tonic.  Because the pieces I saw (and the two I purchased) are in adorable colors, are well-made and, when put to the tennis test, performed nicely on court.

But first, let’s talk about Martina.  Just in case you don’t know who she is, Martina is a former world No. 1 in singles, has won five women’s Grand Slam singles titles, nine women’s Grand Slam doubles titles, and, just last week, won the women’s doubles at the Sony Open with partner Sabine Lisicki who, by the way, she also coaches.  This was Martina’s first title since 2007 so it was a pretty big deal for her to win.  She has been inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and holds the record for being the youngest Grand Slam champion ever, having won the women’s doubles title at Wimbledon in 1996 at the age of 15.

My point being – she’s impressive.

And even more impressive was the time she spent with her fans at the Tonic/Tennis Express event.  She answered questions, posed for numerous photos, gave out autographs to every single person there (multiple autographs to some people) and was just genuinely warm and friendly.  I’m sure she was exhausted having just won the Sony tournament and then flying in to Houston for a full day of media stuff but she was truly wonderful.  Here’s a photo collage I put together of me talking to Martina.  You’ll notice I had lots to say and Martina just kept smiling the whole time:

Oh my gosh.  Who even knows what I was saying to her.

Anyway, Martina noticed that the tank I was wearing was one of her Tonic pieces and she told me how cute it looked.  I think she may be my new favorite tennis player.

I purchased two pieces from this line and am loving both of them.  The first was the Tonic Women’s Women`s Shock Wave Tennis Tank in Lavender that I wore to the event. It’s a loose tank that you wear a sports bra or sports tank with and the color is light, bright and very spring-y.

The second piece I got was the Tonic Women’s Flux Adjustable Tennis Tank in Black and I actually wore this one to play tennis in. I love the adjustable drawstrings in the side seams on this one because I was able to get it to fit just right for me. A lot of times, tops are either too long or too short for me (I’ll bet that’s true for lots of players) so being able to adjust the length means I’ll be wearing this tank a lot.

I had a wonderful time and feel really fortunate that I now know so much about Martina Hingis. I hope she’ll keep playing doubles. Maybe we’ll see her at the French Open!
