Telegram will enable no-sim accounts by using anon-blockchain-numbers

Using anon-blockchain numbers, Telegram will be able to set up accounts with no SIM card.

With a new update, users of the messaging app Telegram can now sign up for accounts using anonymous numbers based on the blockchain instead of their cell phone numbers.

Users will soon be able to hide their phone numbers, which is likely to please people who like services that care about their privacy. The private phone numbers of Telegram users are already hidden from people who haven’t added them.

People who like bitcoin are using the messaging service more and more. The change is part of version 9.2, which went live on December 6. It lets users automatically remove timers from messages in new discussions.

To use this feature, users must buy “blockchain-powered anonymous numbers” from Pavel Durov’s decentralized auction platform, Fragment.

Fragment sells the identities of Telegram users and anonymous phone numbers that can only be used on Telegram. Telegram’s cryptocurrency, the Open Network, is used to buy things on the site.

Fragment’s services are not available to people in the United States, which is a shame.

Once a person has a number, they can use it to join Telegram and get SMS messages with verification codes.

On Fragment, users can buy a random number for 9 TON ($16) or buy and sell them at auctions. At the time this was written, the highest bid for “+888 8 888” was 33,075 TON ($60,527), which shows that some numbers are getting a lot of attention.

In response to yet another wrongdoing by a centralized crypto organization, Durov said on November 30 through his Telegram channel that the company is building a set of decentralized tools in the wake of last month’s FTX fiasco.

Durov told Fragment that among other things, Telegram plans to offer noncustodial wallets and decentralized exchanges.

“The solution is simple: blockchain-based projects need to go back to where they came from, which is being decentralized. He also said that people who use cryptocurrencies should switch to self-hosted wallets and transactions where no third party can be trusted.
