The creator of the instant messaging app Telegram, Pavel Durov, said on Tuesday that usernames may soon be sold using smart contracts like Non Fungible Token (NFT).
“This would create a new platform where username holders could transfer them to interested parties in protected deals — with ownership secured on the blockchain via NFT-like smart contracts.” he said.
Durov’s idea came soon after The Open Network (TON), Telegram’s layer-1 blockchain, held an auction for wallet domain names. In July, the blockchain project released TON DNS, a tool that lets users give digital things like cryptocurrency wallets, smart contracts, and websites names that people can understand.
What would the look of the new Telegram be?
In a post to a private Telegram group called Durov’s Channel, the creator of Telegram said that he was impressed by how well TON’s recent auction for wallet names went. “Imagine how successful Telegram with its 700 million users could be if we put reserved @ usernames, group and channel links for auction,” He emailed the channel. Durov says that other Telegram-specific features, such as channels, stickers, and emojis, could be added to this new ecosystem.
Since Durov talked about it, the price of TON, which is The Open Network’s native token, has also gone up. CoinMarketCap says that the price of TON has gone up by 15.78% in the last 24 hours.
