Teaching Notes: The Excellence of God and His People (Part 4)

Teaching Notes are Bible studies we taught before GraceLife Ministries began publishing articles online in 1995. Some were presented as sermons, others as group studies.

Our hope is that these older studies will be a blessing to you in your life and ministry. Please use them in any way God leads you.

These teaching notes are from a series of studies about The Excellence of God and His People

[These notes are from a study from more than 40 years ago.]

The Excellence of God’s Leaders

King David’s Excellence

  • Psalm 45:2 – Thou art fairer than the children of men: grace is poured into thy lips: therefore God hath blessed thee for ever.
  • 1 Samuel 18:14, 30 – And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the Lord was with him .. Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.
  • Psalm 26:1, 11 – Judge me, O Lord; for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in the Lord; therefore I shall not slide .. But as for me, I will walk in mine integrity: redeem me, and be merciful unto me.
  • Psalm 101:2, 6 – I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart .. Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me.

Daniel’s Excellence

  • Daniel 5:14 – I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee.
  • Daniel 6:3 – Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.

Joseph’s Excellence

  • Genesis 39:3, 23 – And his master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand .. The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the Lord was with him, and that which he did, the Lordmade it to prosper.

King Hezekiah’s Excellence

  • 2 Kings 18:7 – And the Lord was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.

King Solomon’s Excellence

  • 1 Kings 2:3 – And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:

Noah’s Excellence

  • Genesis 6:9 – These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.

Job’s Excellence

  • Job 1:1, 8 – There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil .. And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
  • Job 2:3 – And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

Priest’s Excellence

  • Leviticus 27:12 – And the priest shall value it, whether it be good or bad: as thou valuest it, who art the priest, so shall it be.
  • Leviticus 27:14 – And when a man shall sanctify his house to be holy unto the Lord, then the priest shall estimate it, whether it be good or bad: as the priest shall estimate it, so shall it stand.
  • Numbers 18:30, 32 – Therefore thou shalt say unto them, When ye have heaved the best thereof from it, then it shall be counted unto the Levites as the increase of the threshingfloor, and as the increase of the winepress .. And ye shall bear no sin by reason of it, when ye have heaved from it the best of it: neither shall ye pollute the holy things of the children of Israel, lest ye die.

Leader’s Excellence

  • 1 Chronicles 7:40 –  All these were the children of Asher, heads of their father’s house, choice and mighty men of valour, chief of the princes. And the number throughout the genealogy of them that were apt to the war and to battle was twenty and six thousand men.
  • Titus 1:6, 7-9 – If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.  For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.
  • 1 Timothy 3:1-13 – This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Fighter’s Excellence

  • Joshua 8:3 – So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.
  • Joshua 10:7 – So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.

144,000 Witnesses’ Excellence

  • Revelation 14:5 – And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.

Zechariah and Elizabeth’s Excellence

  • Luke 1:6 – And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

John The Baptist’s Excellence

  • Matthew 11:11a – Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist.

Andronicus and Junias’ Excellence

  • Romans 16:7 – Salute Andronicus and Junia, my kinsmen, and my fellow-prisoners, who are of note among the apostles, who also were in Christ before me.

The Apostle Paul’s Excellence

  • 1 Thessalonians 2:10 – Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe.
