Teaching Notes: One Baptism

Teaching Notes are Bible studies we taught before GraceLife Ministries began publishing articles online in 1995. Some were presented as sermons, others as group studies.

Our hope is that these older studies will be a blessing to you in your life and ministry. Please use them in any way God leads you.

These teaching notes are from a series of studies from Ephesians

[These notes are from almost 40 years ago.]

One Baptism

In Ephesians 4:5, Paul teaches that there is ‘one baptism.’ However, he mentions four different baptisms in his letters. Which is the ‘one baptism’ of Ephesians 4:5?

  1. Spirit Baptism into Christ — His death and His Body … Romans 6:3-4; 1 Corinthians 12:12-13; Galatians 3:27-28; Colossians 2:12
  2. Water Baptism — Paul stated that he baptized only a few people in his early ministry and was glad of that because God had not sent him to baptize, but to preach the Gospel … 1 Corinthians 1:13-17
  3. Israel Baptized into Moses — God united the nation into the promises and protection He gave to Moses … 1 Corinthians 10:2
  4. Baptism for the dead — This is a very obscure teaching with no other biblical support for understanding the meaning … 1 Corinthians 15:29

The evidence of Paul’s letters points to the Holy Spirit’s baptism of believers into Jesus Christ, His death and Body, as the ‘one baptism’ of Ephesians 4:5.
