Teaching Notes: On Duties Of A Church Leader, Part 1

Teaching Notes are Bible studies we taught before GraceLife Ministries began publishing articles online in 1995. Some were presented as sermons, others as group studies.

Our hope is that these older studies will be a blessing to you in your life and ministry. Please use them in any way God leads you.

These teaching notes are from a series of studies about the Duties of a Church Leader.

[These notes are from a radio broadcast study taught more than 40 years ago.]

Taken from the Letters of Paul to Timothy

The Church Leader Should:

1. Charge the teachers of the churches to teach only the doctrines of Christ and His apostles. He should also teach people to give no heed to fables and endless genealogies. These bring about foolish questions rather than edifying the Church to godliness and faith.

2. Teach that the end of the commandment is love —

  • Out of a pure heart
  • Out of a good conscience
  • out of a genuine faith

3. Be actively involved in spiritual warfare – weapons are to be faith and a good conscience

4. Pray for all men with:

  • Supplications
  • Prayers
  • Intercessions
  • Giving of thanks

5. Pray for all governmental leaders so that Christians can lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

6. Lift up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

7. Teach the women of the churches to:

  • Dress modestly
  • Be sober and serious
  • Adorn themselves with good works
  • Learn in silence
  • Not be a teacher of men
  • Not to usurp a man’s authority
  • Continue in faith, love, and holiness with sobriety

8. Teach that overseers are to:

  • Be blameless
  • Be the husband of one wife
  • Be vigilant
  • Be sober
  • Be of good behavior
  • Be hospitable
  • Be apt to teach
  • Be a non-drinker
  • Have no greed for money
  • Be patient
  • Not be a brawler
  • Not be covetous
  • Be a good ruler of his own household, having his children in subjection with all gravity
  • Not be a novice
  • Be of good report with the lost

9. Teach that deacons are to:

  • Be grave
  • Not be double-tongued
  • Be non-drinkers
  • Not be greedy of money
  • Have a good conscience
  • Be proven blameless before being given office
  • Use the office of deacon blamelessly
  • Be the husband of one wife
  • Be good ruler of their household

10. Teach that deacon’s wives are to:

  • Be grave
  • Not be slanderers
  • Be sober
  • Be faithful in all things

Next Time

We will look at ten more Duties of a Church Leader in the next part of our special series.

[Thank you for reading these teaching notes from more than 40 years ago. My prayer is they will be a blessing to you and your ministry.]
