Teaching Notes: On Disciplining God’s Children

By Mmcgee4

Teaching Notes are Bible studies we taught before GraceLife Ministries began publishing articles online in 1995. Some were presented as sermons, others as group studies.

Our hope is that these older studies will be a blessing to you in your life and ministry. Please use them in any way God leads you.

These teaching notes are part of a study in 1 Corinthians.

[These notes are from a Bible study taught more than 40 years ago. The notes are in outline form.]

1 Corinthians 1 – 5 (Overview)

The faults and abuses in the Corinthian church were due to Christians behaving as unregenerate people, as carnal believers, instead of spiritual. The result was disunity.

In Chapter 1 the Apostle Paul wrote on the preeminence of Christ, showing Christ to be the basis (foundation) of unity.

In Chapter 2 Paul wrote about the Holy Spirit being the agent of unity. Disunity in the church is a result of disobedience to Christ and the Holy Spirit.

In Chapter 3 Paul dealt with the spiritual vs carnal Christian. He pointed out the results of carnality and dealt with the coming judgment of believers’ works by Christ Jesus. In verses 16-17 Paul explained that the body of every believer is a holy and sacred temple in which the Holy Spirit dwells. If a carnal believer scandalously desecrates this holy precinct, God will deal with him or her severely, even to the point of physical death.

In Chapter 5 we have a case for church discipline. A case of vile incest, even alien to the gross paganism of Corinth, was reported in the church. The leaders of the Corinthian church were unconcerned by the sin, which deeply concerned Paul. In verses 3-6 Paul gave special instruction on the matter.

In verses 9-13 of Chapter 5 Paul went into more depth concerning church discipline.

Turn to Titus 3:10-11 – Paul had much to say about separating trouble makers from the fellowship of the church.

Let’s also look at –

Romans 16:17-18

2 Thessalonians 3:6-12

1 Timothy 6:3-5

[Thank you for reading these teaching notes from more than 40 years ago. My prayer is they will be a blessing to you, your family and your ministry.
