A vintage Taylorcraft departs San Carlos for some flight time. Certified in 1939, the Model B was the second airplane designed by Clarence Taylor, the “C” indicating a Continental powerplant. At the end of World War II the Taylorcraft company returned to the civil aviation market with the BC-12D, competing with the Piper Cub and other small light aircraft. The BC-12D was introduced in 1945 and by 1946 more than 4,000 had been built, the most produced model of the Taylorcraft family. Unfortunately, the market for light aircraft collapsed in 1946 and the Taylorcraft was forced into bankruptcy (for the first time). In 2002, a Texas car dealer bought the type certificates, formed Taylorcraft Aviation, set up shop with the intent to restart production in 2004.
