EXTRACT

Noah Jake was running late. He grabbed a bagel for breakfast, leaving the house with it held between his teeth, hands free to search for his Oyster card and keys and his phone, which was playing the theme from The Sweeney.

WHAT I THOUGHT

Hilary's debut, Someone Else's Skin was one of my favourite books last year. I have her second novel, No Other Darkness on my Kindle but haven't got round to reading it yet. When I saw, Tastes like Fear at the library I had to read it.

Tastes like Fear is another brilliant crime novel from Hilary. I started the book over a week ago but didn't get time to really get into it until tonight and once I opened the book I couldn't stop. I really like Marnie as a recurring character. She's feisty but has a vulnerable side as well. Her foster-brother, who murdered her parents, makes an appearance in this book as well. There are hints of further darkness he will bring to Marnie's life and I look forward to seeing where this goes. Harm is a brilliant villain. He's so real he's terrifying. There are probably men just like him in the world. I got chills every time I read a scene he was in. I really liked the way the story developed in Tastes like Fear. The pace is pretty relentless and the tension builds and builds until the mind-blowing conclusion. I didn't really have time to pause for breath. Tastes like Fear is a page-turning thriller in every sense of the word.

I'd highly recommend Tastes like Fear. I look forward to Marnie's next case and really must read No Other Darkness soon.
