The Bhaktapur Durbar Square is located in the current town of Bhaktapur, also known as Bhadgoan,which lies 13 km east of Kathmandu. The Vatsala Durga Temple is located Bhaktapur Durbar Square. It was built in 1672 by King Jagat Prakash Malla while the Taleju Bell which is in front of the temple was placed there by King Jaya Ranjit Malla in 1737. The Taleju Bell was placed to mark morning and evening prayers at the Taleju Temple.Taleju Temple, is considered an important religious site by followers of Hinduism and Jainism.

Legend goes that Goddess Taleju had appeared before the king in the form of bee to advice that the temple be built resembling the design of yantra. The Vatsala Durga Temple is made from sandstone and sits beside King Bhupatindra Malla’s statue directly in front of the Royal Palace of 55 Windows.

Many of the buildings in Durbar Square in Bhaktapur were damaged in the 2015 earthquake.
