Grand Theft Auto VI is one of the most waited video games in years. Fans have been excited about it for a long time, ever since Grand Theft Auto V came out about 12 years ago on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Even though Rockstar Games likely started thinking about GTA VI a long time ago, the CEO of Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick, said the real development work didn’t begin until 2020. He shared this information during a recent earnings report for the company’s 2025 fiscal year.
Zelnick said that Rockstar began working seriously on GTA VI in 2020 after their game Red Dead Redemption 2 became very successful. He also mentioned how popular the new GTA VI trailer was and that it broke online viewing records.
The trailer got a lot of attention, and people were very impressed by what they saw. It took Rockstar about six years of focused work to make the game look the way it does now. That shows how skilled the team is.
Zelnick also hinted that some early planning and work started even before 2020, possibly right after Red Dead Redemption 2 was finished. This means the full development time might be closer to eight years.
If GTA VI comes out in May 2026, fans will have waited almost 13 years for the next game in the series. That’s a long time, and it has made expectations very high. People hope the game will be a big success and avoid the problems that happened with games like Cyberpunk 2077.
