Say so long to the country sweetheart and hello to an experimental musician. That’s right, Taylor Swift has strayed from her niche as a contemporary country darling in favor of something new.
The latest in a string of promotional singles, “I Knew You Were Trouble” launches Swift into the realm of dance beats and semi-chaotic breaks in the music. Sure to be another Top 40 hit for Swift, the track is party-ready and will have heartbroken girls everywhere letting their hair down.
Lyrically, “I Knew You Were Trouble” is a standard Swift song. The song opens with the chase, “I was in your sights/ you got me all alone,” and leads into the bad boy routine of hittin’ the door once he has you, “and when I fell hard/ you took a step back.”
In the chorus, Swift confesses “I knew you were trouble when you walked in/ shame on me now.”
Caught up in a whirlwind of emotion, this mysterious bad boy “flew me to places I’d never been/ ’til you put me down,” leaving Swift with a harsh dose of reality, “now I’m lying on the cold hard ground/ oh, trouble, trouble, trouble.”
Another verse proclaims, “a new notch in your belt is all I’ll ever be… I realize the joke is on me.” Talk about a wake-up call!
Swift spoke about her musical exploration on the track with Good Morning America earlier this week.
“It’s a song that’s one of my favorite songs on the album because it sounds just as chaotic as the feeling was when I wrote it,” Swift said. “It’s a song about kind of being frustrated with yourself because you have your heart broken and you knew when you first saw that person you saw all these red flags and you just went for it anyway,” the artist explained. “So, shame on me.”
