For over a decade, Denver-based Linux PC vendor System76 has sold some of the best Linux laptops and desktops. As the company already has Between its phase 3, it is now implementing what it aims: the design and manufacture of products in-house.
Starting with the handcrafted Thelio desktops, then Pop! _OS based on Ubuntu, and after announcing its own Linux laptop, System76 is now job on making your own custom keyboard.
Unsurprisingly, the upcoming System76 keyboard will be designed to work seamlessly with the Pop! Operating system. _OS based on Linux. The keyboard will have three key sizes in the design: 1U (letter / number keys), 1.5U (tab keys), and 2U (shift keys).
And to avoid the traditionally long space bars, the System76 keyboard will have the space bar split into two 2U keys. In addition to varying the size of the keys, you will be able to physically change the location of the keys on your keyboard to create a new layout.
For example, you can place Space and Backspace next to each other to have the two common keys easily accessible under your thumbs. With a redesigned and customizable keyboard, you can interact and control your computer smoothly.
As you may know, the latest version of Pop! _OS 20.04 was released months ago with one of the most exciting keyboard extensions - Pop! _Shell. With new keyboard shortcuts and automatic window tiling, you can control the current Pop OS 20.04 without touching your mouse.
Now by combining Pop OS Auto-Tiling and Keyboard Shortcuts with the new official System76 keyboard, you can have quick navigation and easy organization of the workspace to ensure high efficiency and smooth workflow.
To take it a step further, System76 will also launch a software application next to the keyboard which will allow you to easily configure your new layout. Also, you can use the same layout on your laptop and desktop with the System76 integrated controller firmware.
I guess you must now be very curious as to when you will have a chance to plug in and play with the new System76 keyboard. Well, it's still in the prototyping phase, and System76 hasn't hinted at a release date or even an official name yet.
While it will certainly take time, the wait would be worth it.
