Here is some history of Police in Tamil Nadu :- Copper plate inscriptions dating back tothe period of Thirumalai Nayak, mentions appointment of guards (kavalans) to protect villages.   Pedda Naik was engaged by the British to Guard the town of Madraspatanam with the assistance of peons. The system was the remnant of the ‘Kaval’ organization.Decades later, Francis Kelly and Vambaukkam Raghavachariar became the first Indians to be inducted as Police Magistrate and Dy. Supdt. of Police. Madras Presidency Police bought Freemasons lodge to house the Police Headquarters. The Indian Police Service (IPS) is one of the three All India Services as envisaged in the Constitution of India. In 1861, the British Government introduced the Indian Councils Act, 1861 that created the foundation of a modern and professionalised police bureaucracy in India. It introduced, a new cadre of police, called Superior Police Services, later known as the Indian Imperial Police. In 1948, a year after India gained independence; the Imperial Police was replaced by IPS. In case you wondered, why ‘Tamil speech’ was the reference -Mr Shekhar Deshmukh hails from Maharashtra, born and studied there – after passing IPS and his posting in Tamil Nadu had learnt Tamil and waxed eloquence. He really impressed and impacted us greatly with a great motivating speech in Tamil. ~ to conclude here is meaning to the Thirukural. With great regards – S. Sampathkumar Secretary (SYMA) 12th Jan 2020.
