Swept Away, Ubud, Bali

By Shibanibawa

Swept Away is literally a stone's throw way from River Ayung at The Samaya, a plush Balinese resort located in the Ayung valley at Ubud.

Ambience and Vibe: While the day-time lends a beautiful view of the verdant surroundings and the gushing Ayung river that meanders through the thick foliage, it is the romantic evenings that the restaurant is most famous for. The 100 Candle Dinner features a table set amidst a hundred candles set on the natural landscape outside the restaurant as well as on rocks between the river. The gorgeous setting is made complete with flower petals declaring "I <3 U". If that seems too ostentatious for your sensibility, they also offer a toned down version, as shown in the picture below, that is very beautiful as well.

Expect to Eat: Being an all-day dining, the restaurant offers breakfast, small bites, a la carte as well as a four-/six-course degustation menu, all featuring modern and eclectic dishes with a strong focus on local produce and authentic flavours. The dinner a la carte menu offers fantastic gluten free dishes such as smoked marlin and chilled lobster. We opt for the Archipelago's Favourites: Ikan Goreng Garing and Bebek Samaya. The former is a beautifully plated crispy water fish and comes with green papaya pickle, bean-fern leaf salad, nasi uduk and sambals. Bebek {duck in Balinese} is the crispiest duck I have ever had, and served with jukut urab, snake skin-fruit pickle {that thankfully does not come from snake-skin!}, sambals and steamed rice.

Swept Away offers only one table per night for the 100 Candle Dinner, and a few for the Romantic Dining Experience, so advance bookings are recommended to avoid disappointment.
