Akuressa Police yesterday arrested the suspect in the beheading of a man in Thibbotuwa, Akuressa on Monday (27).
The suspect was arrested while he was hiding in his sister’s house.
The suspect’s father (69) and mother (64) were also produced before the Matara Magistrate’s Court and remanded till July 14.
The victim was identified as Wela Thantharige Sumanapala (72), a resident of Kalugama Hena, Thalagassa Round Road, Thibbotuwa, Akuressa.
He was hacked to death with a sharp weapon, on Monday, Akuressa Police said. The suspect who had arrived at the house of the deceased on Monday morning had cut off the head of the man with a sharp object near his neck and fled.
The victim’s wife and daughter too were admitted to the Matara General Hospital with serious injuries, allegedly inflicted by the suspect.
Police suspect that the murder may have been due to a personal dispute.
The 29-year-old suspect who lived next door to the deceased, had fled the area after committing the crime, police said.
The deceased had been working as a cotton picker at the Godapitiya Temple until recently.
Officers from the Southern Navy Base have launched a special operation to search for the victim’s head on suspicion that the suspect threw his head into the Nilwala River. A boat belonging to the Athuraliya Pradeshiya Sabha is also assisting in the operation.
