Avissawella Police arrested a person for robbing a company of Rs. 5 million in Ranwala, Pugoda, along with a part of the money on Wednesday (31) evening,
According to Police, the suspect has been working as a driver of the same company.
Around Rs. 7 million of the company was transported by a vehicle to be deposited in several banks in Avissawella on May 26. The suspect who joined the company as a driver about two weeks before the incident had fled away in a three wheeler after robbing the money. He was the driver of the vehicle in which the money was transported.
When the officer in charge of the money got out of the vehicle to deposit a part of the money in a bank, the driver had run away with the bag, which contained about Rs 5 million.
Police investigations have revealed that after robbing money, he had gone to Ratnapura and stayed at a hotel, and later he had visited Nuwara Eliya along with his friends in a rented van. He was arrested in Meetirigala while he was returning.
Around Rs 2.5 million was also found in the suspect’s possession at the time of the arrest. Modern mobile phones, travel bags and valuable clothes bought with the money have also been seized. Police said that a part of the money has been distributed among his friends.
Even though he is a resident of Buttala, he temporarily has been residing in a rented house in Meetirigala.
The suspect was to produce before the Avissawella Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Avissawella Police are investigating.
