The Reigning National Chess Champion Susal de Silva of Nalanda College and Esha Mihisha of Visakha Vidyalaya came to the lead after 6 rounds of the Sri Lanka National Chess Championship open and women’s event which played at the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research Institute, Colombo 07. The tournament is conducted with 12 rounds on a round robin basis.

Susal the 16 year old promising player performed well with five straight wins against Buddhika Amarasinghe, Isuru Alahakoon, Dhanushka Bandara, Chandana Wijekoon and S.D.B.K Senevirathne and drew his last game with Nabil Nazar of Gateway College to score 5.5 points.

Former National Chess Champion, Ranindu Liyanage came to the second spot with 4.5 points out of 6 while two players Achintha Kaluarachchi and Isuru Alahakoon came to the third place with 4 points each. Three Players, Janandan Abeysinghe, Sanudula Dahamdi and WIM Sachini Ranasinghe are in the second spot with 4 points each.

Meanwhile Esha Mihisha came to the lead in the Women’s National Chess Championships with 5 points out of six possible games. Esha recorded victories against Chamodya Yapabandara, Nemindi Ramanayake, Desandi Gamage and Tiumi Yashora while got two draws with Minethma Wickramasinghe and W.M.M.N Wijesinghe to maintain an unbeaten record so far in this tournament.

The tournament conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka(CFSL) commenced on last April 23 and will continue till May 1. The top five players of the events will be included in the Sri Lanka National Chess teams which will play at the FIDE World Chess Olympiad in July in Chennai, India.
