Surprises At The Market

Today's Surprise #1: the vendor who I buy vegetarian alheira from at Mercado de Matosinhos has a mini kitchen behind his stand where he cooks lunch. Today he showed me how to cook ray! #PortugueseKitchen

I don’t usually post my Instagram shots here anymore, but I had a Portuguese Kitchen moment recently and I didn’t want it to go unchronicled simply because I didn’t have my DSLR with me (I only Instagram with my phone).

Last week I was at Mercado de Matosinhos with some German couchsurfers and I was telling them about vegetarian alheiras. I needed to buy some to demo them properly, and I went to my usual source for such things, a vendor who has a corner stand in the market. Well, did he ever surprise me! First he said the vegetarian alheira supplier wasn’t stocking them right now (sadface), but then he proceeded to show me his lunch cooking on the stove — a fish stew but made with ray. All these months I’ve been going to Mercado de Matosinhos and I’d never noticed his kitchen setup before!

Then he showed me the online accolades for the produce carvings he’s made, including an interview in the market. I was impressed by his carving skills, and hoped he’d give me a family story about where he learned how to do it. It was both anticlimactic and hilarious how proud he was to say that he learned how to carve fruits and vegetables from YouTube!

Today's Surprise #2: my go-to vegetarian alheira guy also makes elaborate food carvings! Where did he learn how to do this? "YouTube!" he said proudly.
