This month Amy Winehouse would have been 30 years old. To mark Amy’s 30th birthday the Amy Winehouse foundation is organising a series of pop up events in Camden to bring awareness of the great work that is being done in Amy’s name.

The foundation was set up in Amy’s memory to prevent the effects of drug and alcohol misuse on young people. It also aims to support, inform and inspire vulnerable and disadvantaged young people to help them reach their full potential.

The monies raised at these events and through donations will help support  many concerns. Read about all of them here.

I popped into a pop up shop that has been set up at 69 Camden High Street today, not too far from Moorgate tube station to see what was on offer. The shop was set up by collective london.

This was my first experience of a pop up shop. I only had really heard the term whilst watching Mary Portas Queen of Shops (London’s leading retail consultant). My understanding is that organisations and independent retailers take over unused shop spaces in creative ways. A great way of livening up our somewhat forgotten high street.

This small shop is full of Amy Winehouse merchandise ranging from mugs and CD’s to clothes in the style of Amy Winehouse and nails being painted inspired by Amy Winehouse. In the back room of the shop there is a vinyl record player spinning Amy Winehouse tracks next a clothes rack stacked with Amy Winehouse tops.

Clearly much effort had gone to putting this shop together. The shop was very busy and clearly there is a lot of love for Amy Winehouse. Interestingly some of the girls shopping had modelled themselves on Amy. They had  perfected the Amy look -quite endearing really.

The whole approach is very local and family orientated, celebrating the fact that Amy loved Camden. and was Camden. The assistant at the tills was telling people that the family would be around on Monday around 1.00 if you would like to meet them. I imagine it will be the shop will be full. He told me on the first day of opening they had sold £3000 worth of goods. Not bad going.

Here are five things to do today to support this very worthwhile foundation.

  1. Pop into the pop up shop on Camden High street. The shop closes on the 30th of September so you only have a couple of days left. The family are visiting about 1.00 so you could plan your visit to coincide. By some of the excellent merchandise on offer.
  2. Buy the book “Amy – My Daughter” written by Amy’s father, Mitch. This is available from the shop or online here from Amazon. If you get down to the shop they you can buy signed copies.
  3. Create your own event through Just Giving. There ares some suggestions on this page.
  4. Follow the Amy Winehouse foundation on Facebook. Donate £3.00 to the foundation by texting AMY to 70007.
  5. Buy Lioness: Hidden Treasures for a compilation of unreleased tracks by Amy Winehouse. The iTunes link is just a click away.
