The classic Spitfire first flew in 1936 and was pivotal in the air defense of Great Britain. The design evolved as the war went on, with the Mk IX developed to combat the FW190 using a new two-stage supercharged Merlin engine. The Type E wing reduced the original eight-gun .303 cal armament to a potent mix of four .50 cal/20mm guns. Post-war this aircraft wound up in Israel, where it eventually became a playground attraction before it was rescued in 1978. Restoration was finally completed in 1988, and the Museum acquired it in 1999. Nikon D7000 w/18-200 mm, processed with Aperture.
