‘Supergirl’ Recap: ‘Trinity’

Last week’s episode of Supergirl, Trinity (3×17) brought us the full force of the Worldkillers as we have Reign/Sam (Odette Annable), Purity/Julia (Krys Marshall), and Pestilence/Grace (Angela Zhou).  

This is definitely one version of the title though another interpretation can definitely when we see Supergirl/Kara (Melissa Benoist), Alex (Chyler Leigh), and Lena (Katie McGrath) teaming up together to try to save Sam.  There’s a lot of tension between characters in this episode and it feels like it’s one of the few episodes where we don’t get the balance between seriousness and humor.  It’s very much all seriousness and feels. We find out that Grace was fully taken by Pestilence and thus killed, which only leaves Sam and Julia to fight for their humanity.  In order to destroy their human versions, they are haunted by the deaths that their Worldkiller counterparts are responsible for but they are also forgetting. Sam is trying to be so strong and trying to keep Julia fighting, but when things seem to be spiraling out of control and that they’re not going to make it…Sam makes a breakthrough.  Sam and Julia have to write anything that they know so that they can remember who they are.

At the DEO, Lena is being interrogated about what she was doing at L Corp with Sam.  They needed to know all the details and it really feels apparent as an audience member that there’s more hurt feelings than anything else especially when it comes to Kara…but there’s a mix when it comes to Alex for sure (since she’s the one who started the tests on Sam to begin with).  We get a bit more Kryptonian background about what we’ve been seeing all season, which is Juru (a Kryptonian Valley aka the parallel dimension that Sam and Julia are currently trapped in) and Lena confirms as being real.  With an eclipse going on, it seems like Kara is quite effected…I had a bit of problems about the consistency but I think that was just generally to make it more dire for Kara and to keep tensions high.  Lena used Kryptonite to keep Reign at bay and claims that it’s the last of Lex’s stash, which Kara later asks James (Mehcad Brooks) to go in and confirm.  Lena calls James from the DEO balcony and tells him the truth of it all, she’s clearly emotional and worried about losing what she holds most dear (which isn’t L Corp but her relationships).  

When Supergirl finds herself in Juru for a moment, seeing Sam and Julia, it’s clear that getting back in there is the mission.  They go to the Legion Cruiser in order to put Kara into a state to enter Juru, but she’s not going alone…she’s carrying Alex and Lena with her, which Brainy (Jesse Rath) warns might not be safe.  Before they go into Juru, Alex asks Lena if Ruby (Emma Tremblay) is safe…which Lena confirms.  There’s also this great moment between Kara and Mon-El (Chris Wood) where she makes him promise to keep her in to finish the mission but pull out Lena and Alex if there’s a problem.  This reminded me of the episode “For the Girl Who Has Everything” (1×13) when Alex asks James to make sure that she stays in to pull Kara out of the Black Mercy dream for fear that J’onn (David Harewood) would pull her out too soon.  After Kara, Alex, and Lena first enter Juru there’s a moment where Mon-El and J’onn have a moment where he’s extremely torn and it’s clear that Mon-El still has feelings for Kara but is trying to be respectful of his marriage to Imra.  We also have this short sequence between Winn (Jeremy Jordan) and James as Guardian as he’s trying to find out if Lena still has Kryptonite (which James lies about seeing none of because he doesn’t even go into the vault out of his love and trust of Lena).  

In Juru, Alex immediately decides that they need to have protection and fashions them some pokey sticks (which she tests on Lena to see if they can get hurt in there).  This is definitely a light moment we need with all the tension (and all the tension to still come). “Why would you ever exercise?” was also a great light note in the episode when Kara is really feeling the weight of carrying Alex and Lena in there.  Feel our pain, Kara. This is immediately followed by a jab at Lena, it’s very clear that both Kara and Alex are not pleased with Lena’s actions and are on the same page, but Lena brings up that they all have secrets. When Lena asks for Kara’s name, I honestly was sort of waiting for Kara to drop it and it to not even register with Lena in that moment (also, I don’t know how no one else didn’t accidentally call her Kara instead of Supergirl around Lena the entire episode).  Kara instead counters that it’s not something that a Luthor can ask someone in her family (which definitely makes us feel like Lena’s on the villain list). This back and forth doesn’t last long as the trio is attacked by what Kara called Kryptonian demons, but I kept waiting for them to be called Dementors. I couldn’t have been the only one thinking this, right?

Our brave and bickering trio finally find Sam and Julia in Juru and try to get them to wake up so that someone can send a signal as to where their bodies actually are.  Sam makes the comment “I killed you too” to Supergirl and Alex and I’m still not sure if that comment is solely supposed to be about Sam thinking that it’s like Julia, where she was seeing those that her Worldkiller counterpart killed…or is this some kind of premonition?  It’s probably the former, but it’s still interesting to think about. Between the eclipse and carrying the extra weight in Juru, we see Kara becoming weaker though still determined to finish their mission. The three of them reminding Sam of all the things she is and that she has Ruby to live for…that snaps her out of it.   However, it brings Reign into Juru in her place.

Conscious in the Worldkillers’ fortress, Sam is able to put out a signal as to where they are on Earth, but that just wakes up the others.  Pestilence ends up bringing Reign back out.

Having a location, Kara and the others are pulled from Juru and the Legion

ship heads that way.  This is when we get to one of my favorite parts of this whole episode, Winn presents Alex with not only a new suit that he’s designed just for her but also a new weapon.  Alex is seriously like a little kid in a candy store, but this is just a long time coming (Mon-El’s even had two suits, three if you count the outfit he wore last season).  While Kara, Alex, J’onn, Mon-El, and Imra (Amy Jackson) go down to the surface to fight the Worldkillers the Legion Cruiser comes under attack and by Purity’s cries.  With Brainy trying to figure out how to get things back online, we find out that not only can Lena take charge…but she also knows her way around the future spaceship.  This was a great moment and it made me wonder if we’ll get to see Lena working with them (Legion and DEO) more during the end of this season.
In the fortress, the fight is becoming serious and it seems like the Worldkillers are winning.  We get to see Alex’s gun in the field, and I seriously thought that she was going to get badly hurt there for a moment.  As they’re fighting, they’re trying to bring out the human counterparts and there’s this mantra that both Alex and Kara use of ‘rise up’ (which I couldn’t stop thinking of Hamilton whenever they said it).  We finally get to see Julia ‘rise up’ and is able to control Purity’s powers in order to attack Pestilence…Julia ends up being killed by Pestilence, but Julia is able to end her in return before dying.  This definitely shows everyone that there is a possibility to save Sam (though it’s obviously not showing them anyone’s who’s survived it). With both Purity and Pestilence gone, we see their energies go into Reign (and there’s a shot of Kara and Alex seeing this happening as well).  I have great confusion over this because it’s clear to the audience and it seems to everyone in the room…but it seems like they think that Pestilence is gone when it seems clear that Reign is going to have the power of all three Worldkillers now. Maybe it’s because there’s no real time to process this?  Hopefully the next episode will address this. With the fortress collapsing, our heroes flee to safety.

Now that things seem to be over, Imra is celebrating and declaring that they can go home (apparently Brainy has to keep on earning his title by figuring this part out).  We also get to see a short discussion and appreciation between Kara, Alex, and J’onn over Alex’s new suit before Kara makes amends with Lena as Supergirl. The final thing we’re left with in this episode is sort of an unexpected bomb…Lena and James have this exchange of basically trust and for secrets to be let loose (including that Supergirl asked James to see if she still had Kryptonite…and oh, he’s also Guardian).  What we’re left to find out is that Lena has figured out how to make Kryptonite (yeah we didn’t really think that last season was realistically the last time we were going to actually see that in play, right?).
