On Monday we made a dinner stop in Esposende (Braga District) on our return south from the long weekend in Galicia and gained back the hour we lost in Spain, which is on Central European Time. No matter how times we go back and forth, it always seems odd to switch going north/south rather than east/west. And while we were in Galicia, it felt really odd to have light after 9:30pm at this time of the year.
Anyway, once we were back in Portugal the task at hand was to figure out where and what to eat; we chose Esposende because we could eat by the water. It surprised me as I was reviewing past posts of Esposende that the only time I made a proper stop in this area was in December 2013! How can this be?? It’s only about 45 minutes north on the national road from where we live. Alas, as the pictures prove, besides December 2013 we’ve either just driven through or stopped elsewhere in the district:
Igreja Antiga de São Bartolomeu do Mar
Beach Day In Apúlia + Ofir
A Sunset, Surfer, and a Floating Turbine
Esposende’s waterfront is the mouth of the Cávado River, which explains why it’s so calm — there’s a peninsula made up of a park and sandbar that serves as a buffer for the Atlantic. Part of the promenade extends over the water and continues as far as the eye can see in both directions.
The rest of these pictures are of the maritime museum and marina, which I shot at blue hour that day back in 2013. This time I noticed a sign for boat trips along the river, which I thought was a bargain for 15km/1.5 hours at €10. Something to keep in mind for the next time we’re in Esposende, which I plan to be in the less-distant future than this stop was from the last time.
