As the sun rises, it gradually illuminates the granite walls of El Capitan and Half Dome, creating a spectacular sight. Most visitors to the park will see tunnel view as they enter from the Wawona Tunnes on the southwest entrance to the park. But if you take the Inspiration point trail, you can reach even more spectacular views of the park.
Olmsted Point:
Located along the Tioga Road, Olmsted Point offers a different perspective of Half Dome and the surrounding peaks. The sun rising behind you and lighting up the granite surfaces in front of you is truly awe-inspiring. The trail is less than 500m, but it intersects the Snow Creek trail which can be hiked up from the valley floor (best start very early to catch sunrise on this one)
Mariposa Grove:
For those who prefer a quieter and more peaceful experience, Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias is a great option. Watching the sunrise through the towering giant sequoias is a unique and serene experience.
Sentinel Dome:
Sentinel Dome offers a 360-degree view of Yosemite. From here, you can see the entire Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, El Capitan, and even the distant Nevada and Yosemite Falls. As the sun rises, the entire scene is slowly illuminated, creating a breathtaking panorama.
Remember to check the weather and road conditions before you head out, as some of these locations may be inaccessible during certain times of the year. Also, it is always a good idea to bring a flashlight, some snacks, and water. And most importantly, don’t forget your camera to capture the magical moments!
