Not long ago, a reader asked where they could see fishing boats during their visit to Porto. I suggested Angeiras in Lavra, a fishing village on the northern beaches of Matosinhos and a stone’s throw from Vila do Conde.
I’ve photographed around Angeiras before, but only in the colder months when the sun shone less brightly and there were fewer boats out. I wanted to return in the summer because the village would be livelier — and it was! Today happened to be the end of Festa da Sardinha, when the last of the lunch crowd were enjoying their assadas. Between the hot grills, the nets and boats in these pictures, you can imagine the fishy smells wafting around.
There’s more than fishing boats here, though, the village houses are colourful and the beaches uncrowded. Aside from the occasional pilgrim walking the coastal path of the Caminho de Santiago, there are very few tourists.
