There’s an extended heatwave in Portugal right now, with temperatures between 30 and 40 degrees Celsius around the country. I don’t know about you, but that’s too hot for me. I don’t know how I could have lived in this environment — plus a lot more humidity — for six months in Northern Australia. It saps energy. But if you go to the beach, you don’t need much!
That said, we managed to accomplish more than I expected in one day, even with the help of air conditioning. I rescued two young birds yesterday who were dumped at the edge of a field behind my house in a shoebox, and this morning we dropped them off at Parque Biológico in Vila Nova de Gaia for rehabilitation. They couldn’t fly and were pretty traumatized. Also, dehydrated and hungry, I imagine, as I don’t know how long they were wandering around in this intense heat. I’d put one in a plastic box and took a few photos with my phone for ID purposes while we tried to figure out where to take them. I thought they were parakeets, but after we dropped them off the facility said they were young cockatoos. I gave the staff a report of how I found them, and they gave us a copy of the submission form with reference number for follow up. The birds are super cute, but they’re exotic creatures in need of specialized care in an aviary.
Bird Rescue Mission completed, that freed us up for the rest of the day, which we spent at various beaches south of Porto. I found all sort of gems to photograph while driving around, which I’ll post about later. For now, a few beach photos and a video at the end.
