Again, this is the first episode of a third season, which makes everything even harder. I am a huge fan of Sengoku Basara. I have been fangirling over this episode ever since it aired. Before it aired actually since I had seen this on the big screen at Japan Expo.
I wish I could do a summary about this but I haven’t read any. I have no idea about what is going to happen except that we are on the road to the battle of Sekigahara and that we probably are going to follow Ieyasu and Mitsunari as they grow apart from each other and end up fighting.
To be honest, I’m still wondering how the hell they intend on making a third season with a whole cast of characters dead or nearly.
To be honest, I’m kinda bummed about the fact they brought back everyone without even thinking about explaining how the hell this is possible.
And, lastly, to be honest, I am happier than I care to admit that everyone is back. (Especially my favorite character, whom I have seen in the OP but not in action yet. I suspect they brought him back just for the pleasure of killing him off. Again.)
First thing to strike me as I watch this was that the character designer has changed. This is very, very obvious. I shouldn’t complain, everyone is still easily recognizable, but, when you’ve done two seasons and a movie, when a character suddenly changes his appearances, it’s weird. Hanbei was pretty girly before but this new lipstick of his, it’s even worse.
Second thing to strike me as I watch this was that it’s still as funny as ever. My seiyuu problem makes things even worse.
Talking about seiyuu, everyone is back too! Kazuya Nakai is still very cool and over the top as Masamune. Shouichirou Hoshi is still screaming every time he has the chance. Akira Ishida still sounds so smart and cunning as Hanbei.
There hasn’t been a single thing I disliked about Sengoku Basara. The thing is that it probably isn’t a very objective review. I loved that series to death.
I do have some doubts about the actual story of the anime though. No matter how happy I am, I can’t really get over the fact that we’re brought back in a world where everyone is supposed to be dead and in fact are still alive. Somehow, I can do better with historical inaccuracies than I can with that simple little thing.
I guess I’ll get used to it. I love that anime after all. And, while it should be a major thing to worry about, we’re talking about Sengoku Basara, no one cares about consistency as long as it’s both interesting and funny. Which it never failed to be in the past.
A definite watch for me.
