Black Butler: Book of Circus

This season is the season in which starts the long-awaited actual second season of Black Butler. Unlike the last one that was original, this new season is an adaptation of the next arc of the manga: the Circus Arc.

In this anime we find again Ciel and Sebastian as they solve mysteries for the Queen. As the title suggests, this time, the mystery is centered around a Circus.

As I say every season, it is quite hard to review first episodes of second seasons. What I mean is that you obviously want to compare it to the first one.

As such, the thing I need to say is that if you liked the very first adaptation of Black Butler, you surely will find this new season to your tastes.

For example, lately, I have fallen a bit out of love with the manga version of this series, well, it seems like my love is back in full force. That’s how powerful this anime adaptation is.

I really liked this first episode. I might like the next ones less, who knows, but this first episode had everything I liked about Black Butler.

For one, it had stunning voice actors. As usual, Daisuke Ono was beyond perfect as Sebastian. Sakamoto Maaya was beyond perfect as Ciel. And Kouji Yusa was beyond perfect as Lau.

For seconds, it had stunning visuals. One, if not the best, thing about Black Butler is surely the art style. It probably is the thing that kept me reading for so long.

I found this first episode did a good job in introducing the story. It seemed to me that it made everything easy to understand for everyone. It introduces the main characters again. It also introduces the relationship between Ciel and Sebastian as well as how the society in which they live in works. It did a wonderful job in introducing the actual work Ciel does for Her Majesty.

And it did all this with just the right amount of bright and dark moments.

The thing I remembered the most after I finished watching this episode was the amount of darkness involved in it, both from humans and demons. I should have expected this, it is always something Black Butler does well.

We haven’t seen the Circus outside of the very end of the episode yet, we only have seen some pictures of it. Visually, it has been my favorite in the manga so I definitely am looking forward to see more of it.

I think Black Butler has been one of my surprises this season. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did. I expected this to be just a casual watch, it was even on my “maybe” list. Well, it isn’t anymore.

Now I just hope the quality stays constant and we won’t have to face the disappointment we faced at the end of the first season.

Won’t keep me from watching though.
