Summer Anime 2014: Aldnoah.Zero Impressions

Aldnoah.Zero

I’m pretty sure a lot of moments stood out to people in Aldnoah.Zero, and you wouldn’t be wrong for thinking that. I mean, the episode had eons of exposition about two worlds (distilled by saying Old Humanity and New Humanity, Earth and Mars), a catastrophe with the killing of Vers Empire’s Princess, and the annihilation of New Orleans.

But I could only be fascinated by Inaho, and how he hopefully changes from episode 1 from here on out based on a scene that amused me.

The Princess has arrived on Earth, and is on a goodwill tour to foster peace between Earth and Mars. Amidst all the hustle and bustle that comes with it – from the crowds, the news reporters, etc – there’s also a moment of, “meh, is it really all that important?” So while Inaho’s friends are talking excitedly about how big this moment is, how great it seems, and all that junk, Inaho’s more interested in learning the latest sale on…eggs.

It’s obviously not the seminal moment in the episode, which was packed with a lot of questions that currently don’t have answers because…it’s a first episode. You’re gonna need questions to maintain interest and stuff, but expect to get maybe some of them answered later on. But for an episode that showed its hand with quite possibly most of the relevant characters in Aldnoah.Zero on Earth and on Mars, the only character I found interesting was this dude who seems apathetic to it all.

That might be because he reminds me of myself: some things matter, but not everything is a big event to waste your energy on.

So I personally wonder what his development will be like, since he’s one of the main characters in the series. Despite that status, he appeared occasionally in the episode, but I assume he’ll become more relevant later on. What is his past like that he has this type of personality? Does he have parents? Was he always like this? Why do people hang out with him? How good is he in a mech? How will his personality change as this new war that seems is gonna happen ravages where he lives? It’s all questions that I ponder about as I question why he seems currently empty right now.

Otherwise, Aldnoah.Zero didn’t have the best episode, but the potential is there to be one of the best anime of the season. The scope it wants to cover – relations between Earth and Mars, the obvious dissent inside the Vers Empire, the ramifications of the attack on the princess, etc – is ambitious and if it plays its cards right this will be a great show.

It just needs to avoid playing itself out with so much exposition. The first 2/3 of the episode had a lot of information to process, and it was a drag at times. You hope with all this explanation that it’ll have a decent balance as the episodes continue. The latter half of the episode was cool. Even though there wasn’t too much development of the Princess, her ideals and what she wanted to accomplish, and how it ended so simply at the end, actually felt impactful. Taking apart New Orleans was cruel in a lot of ways, but the actual showcase of it was impressive. That, and along with the music, was a no-brainer in me labeling Aldnoah.Zero a keeper, and I think you all should try and keep up with it as well, and hope that it doesn’t fizzle out.
