Story: Sumala starts when Sulastri (Maya) returns to her hometown with her husband to start a family. However, her past has been haunting her after a traumatic experience. To make matters worse the couple has been struggling to conceive, and she turns to an unusual method. While it brings the couple a child Kumala (Hill), she wasn’t what Sodejiman (Sinathrya) was expecting.
Kumala is born deformed and hated by her father. The family do what they can to give her a good life, but even the town turns on her. That is until Sumala makes contact with her and leads her on a rampage on anyone who does Kumala wrong, including her parents.
Verdict on Sumala
Recap
The movie follows a wealthy family who welcomes their first child. However, she is born deformed, and her family and the village treat her like an outsider. It leads her to make a connection with a vengeful spirit who helps her get revenge on anyone who has wronged her.
Best Parts
The movie creates an excellent (even if horribly created) sense of isolation and pain for young Kumala. It shows the years of abuse coming back to create a nightmare connection to an evil spirit. Once unleashed, it is a full bloodbath, and nothing seems to be off the table. There are countless brutal slayings, showing just how evil the spirit is.
Worst Parts
We do get a bloodbath, but some parts of the decision-making could upset people. There is violence toward younger people and babies that people won’t like or want to accept in movies.
Final Thoughts –Sumala is a voraciously violent possession movie.
