Sugar Cane (Disney Plus)- A Gut Punch Of A Film For Oscar Consideration

Quick Take: The funny thing is, I got a screener for Sugar Cane, but it was so close to its drop on Disney Plus, I figured I’d wait for the inevitable audio description on Disney Plus. Then, the movie landed, and no audio description. Wait, what? this is one of the most gut punching documentaries of 2024, and is a virtual lock for an Oscar nomination, so where is the audio description track?

On an unrelated note,I had this dream last night. And in that dream, I was talking to a director, and I was asking him why his movie didn’t have audio description. his answer was that the film did have audio description, but it just wasn’t being used. Then we went back and forth on how absolutely insane that would be. I mean, why have accessibility and not use it? Are there people out there building wheelchair ramps, but then blocking them off so they can’t be used? then I woke up. totally unrelated.

So audio description would be nice. This is a deeply troubling look at what was allowed to happen to indigenous populations in this country for years, and coincided with an eventual recognition of the atrocities that actually came about in 2024. I don’t like to rewatch Sugar Cane, but should Disney ever decide to put some audio description on this, I would watch this again. it is a difficult watch, but it demands attention. Keep your eye on this. If it shows up finally with audio description, please watch it. it is depressing, because the reality is that people can be awful humans. While I sit here comfortably in my home advocating for accessibility, the reality is that many have struggled and they had no voice. their voice is now, and it is in the form of this documentary.
