Operation “Marhaba 2019” for the return of Moroccans residing abroad is going “well” at the Tangier Med Passengers port, where transit times have been reduced, said Friday the director of this port, Kamal Lakhmas.
In a press statement, Kamal Lakhmas indicated that the recorded volume of passenger and vehicle traffic corresponds to the forecasts announced by the port authorities at the beginning of the operation, noting that the average transit time at Tangier Med Passengers port was about 30 minutes.
This performance is the result of the efforts of all the stakeholders in the port and coordination with the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, he stressed, calling on travellers to consult the official website of the port and its pages on social networks, as well as the radio of the port Tangier Med, in order to know the latest developments and be able to make the crossing under the best conditions.
The Tangier Med port authority had announced, at the beginning of the “Marhaba 2019” operation on 5 June last, a series of measures to guarantee the comfort of passengers, reduce travel time, ensure better fluidity of vehicle flows in both directions, widen the shaded area and increase the number of staff responsible for orientation and advice.
The Tangier Med Passengers port is served by regular shipping lines to Algeciras (Spain), Sète (France), Genoa and Savona (Italy), via a fleet of 12 vessels, in addition to an additional boat on the Tangier Med-Algeciras line used during peak traffic periods. These ships have a total capacity of 43,000 passengers and 10,000 vehicles per day.
For his part, Mourad El Menini, head of the Marhaba operation at the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, said that the Foundation’s 20 centres, including five located outside the country, have carried out more than 50,000 interventions and services for the benefit of Moroccans around the world, including 10,000 medical interventions, adding that the operation is carried out in conditions marked by “fluidity and safety”.
The port of Tangier Med, the main port of entry and exit for Moroccans residing abroad, has recorded 60% of these interventions, most of them of a medical nature, he said.
To meet the strong demand in this period, the Foundation has strengthened its services by launching three mobile teams and a medical unit to guarantee quality services both in terms of medical and social assistance, Mourad El Menini continued.
He added that the “Marhaba 2019” operation is about to enter its second phase, which will see the transit of more than 18,000 passengers and 5,000 vehicles, noting that the available data show an 11% increase in the number of passengers and 6% in the number of vehicles compared to the same period last year.
