Stylish Thoughts – Wardrobe Oxygen

I'm delighted to be sharing the Stylish Thoughts of Alison from Washington DC who writes the fabulous blog Wardrobe Oxygen

What are your top tips for looking stylish when travelling?
Choose refined knits that stretch but don't stretch out over a long flight. My favorites are matte jersey and Ponte de Roma. I swear by Body Shop's Vitamin E Face Mist; it's a TSA-approved size and adds moisture to your face without mussing your makeup. The scent is also refreshing after hours of recycled air on the plane. Finally, bring a pashmina. It can be a wrap when you're cold, balled up as a neck support, can be a blanket, an accessory when you reach your destination and even your evening wrap with your LBD.

Who inspires you?
My daughter. She has such a defined personality and personal style and never worries what others will think of her appearance. She mixes prints like a pro and always adds a little something unexpected to her look to make it completely her. I regularly ask her for fashion advice!

Do you have a signature piece or style?
Stripes and leopard print. Over the years, my wardrobe may change, but I always have these two patterns in my closet. I adore leopard print shoes; I find them to be a neutral and they go with most everything (as I type this I am wearing a pair with an Ankara print skirt and denim jacket; this weekend I wore a pair of leopard print pumps with jeans, a striped tee and black blazer). Both prints are classic and transcend current trends.

What's your secret to making yourself stand out?
Smiling! Especially at fashion events, there's a lot of sophisticated pouts and cocky scowls. I'm often told how my smile makes me stand out in a crowd and makes my face memorable!

The one piece of advice most women need but don't get?
Dress for your soul, not your thighs. It doesn't matter how whittled your waist looks if you aren't comfortable in your skin or your wardrobe.
What's the best piece of style wisdom you've ever received?
When I was a merchandiser for Express, my regional manager told me to dress not for the job I had but the job I desired. Since then, I try to follow this not just for my career but all aspects of my life. Being ambitious with fashion has never failed me!

What is your favourite current trend?
I love how fashion right now is chic yet practical. From ankle boots with a low walkable heel to turtlenecks and chunky cableknits (it's almost winter here in Washington DC), it's refreshing to be able to be stylish and comfortable at the same time!
How would you describe your personal style?
