Offspring Cast featuring Kat Stewart - photo by Andrew Maccoll
Today I’m pleased to bring you the stylish thoughts of the completely gorgeous Kat Stewart, Australian actress and former publicist of Penguin Books Australia (yep, we used to work together many years ago). Kat is currently starring in Offspring (Channel 10) and Tangle (Foxtel/Austar) and was in the first brilliant Underbelly Series and on Newstopia.

What is the secret to great style?
I think the secret to great style is knowing who you are. There’s a confidence that comes with that which means you are not going to be a slave to trends, but will adapt what suits and ignore what doesn’t.
What is the one thing you would spend a lot of money on?
I feel less guilty about spending a lot on money on something I will wear or use all the time like a watch or a beautiful (every day) handbag.

What is the one thing you wouldn’t spend a lot of money on?
Having already made this mistake, a gown I know I will only wear once!
What are your top tips for looking stylish when travelling?
A couple of beautiful multi-purpose wraps/scarves which can change the look of an outfit and offer warmth when travelling on a plane and big sunglasses to hide tired eyes!
What’s the best piece of style wisdom you’ve ever received?
Take something off before you leave the house (I’m getting a little bit more disciplined as I get older!)
What is your favourite current trend?
1920’s elegance and 1940’s silhouettes

Audrey Hepburn, Cate Blanchett and Melbourne’s own J’Aton Couture.

As an actress where you are dressed as a character (Roberta Williams, very different from Billie Proudman for example) and each character has her own personality (which is reflected in the clothing) has wearing other people’s clothes and personality changed your own personal style over the years in your day to day clothing?
I enjoy wearing clothes for a character I wouldn’t ordinarily choose for myself. It gives me some distance from ‘me’ and more freedom to inhabit the character. I do get quite involved in a character’s aesthetic while I’m shooting/performing. After filming the first series of Tangle for example I bought up most of my character’s dresses, only to look at them a week or 2 after filming had wrapped and wonder what on earth I’d been thinking!! So I can get absorbed in a character’s wardrobe while I’m playing her, but then (fortunately for some characters!), find my way back to my own style afterwards.
