What is the secret to great style?
The secret to great style at any age is really knowing yourself…and I mean that in a way that is bigger than just knowing your measurements and what styles look good on you. I mean that in the broader sense. The confidence that comes along with knowing who you are transmits itself in the way you present yourself. It’s unapologetic. Great style never looks like an apology.
What is the one thing you would spend a lot of money on?
An investment handbag like a classic Louis Vuitton that never goes out of style (I actually just bought a Speedy Bandouliere and love it). A classic camel coat. And shoes. I think it’s important to have good shoes. Good shoes move and grow with you. And like they say, if it’s worth wearing, it’s worth repairing. You can revitalize a pair of good shoes by visiting a shoe repair.
What is the one thing you wouldn’t spend a lot of money on?
T-shirts (I’m talking to YOU Kanye!), filmy little tops that are meant for layering under things. Swimwear (I’m really hard on bikinis so I always get them on sale) and bathing suit cover-ups.
What are your top tips for looking stylish when travelling?
There are plenty of comfortable clothes out there that are stylish – sweatpants are inexcusable. Let the world around you know that you care about everyone’s collective travel experience by wearing something pulled-together when you travel. It doesn’t have to be art…just please…no more sweatpants.
What’s your secret to making yourself stand out?
Having a significant amount of gray hair in your early 40s doesn’t hurt. I actually decided to go natural because I thought it would be a way to get a more unique look that is really and truly one of a kind. I was right, I love it. After all, its only hair.
What’s the worst current trend?
Overalls and pastel floral one-piece shorts rompers. Even teenagers look like mutton dressed as lamb in these garments. They’re best left to the under-two set, in my opinion.
How would you describe your personal style?
A blend of classic American prep with dashes of luxury and rock and roll edge. Put in a blender and mixed.
