Studio Ghibli on Netflix: 5 initiation tales and extraordinary destinies to watch with your family – Film NewsStudio Ghibli

Spirited away

With My Neighbor Totoro, Le Voyage de Chihiro is undoubtedly one of the Studio Ghibli films most well known to the general public, and for good reason. Released a little less than 20 years ago, this feature film adopts a narration close to European tales: separated from her parents transformed into pigs, the little Chihiro, naughty on the edges, will have to overcome her fears to give an air of normalcy in his life. While rubbing shoulders with the world of adults, as disturbing as it is poetic, the little girl learns to become a little less capricious and a little more responsible, without denying her playful personality. Unforgettable.

The castle in the Sky

With a press rating of 4.9 on AlloCiné (and 4.3 according to viewers), Le Château dans le ciel is considered by many to be THE masterpiece of Hayao Miyazaki, who never hid that it was his favorite movie. Beyond its undeniable scriptwriting and aesthetic qualities, it is also the first feature film by Studio Ghibli. And in 1986, the date of its release in Japan, he laid down the broad outlines of what the studio's themes were going to be for the years to come, such as the protection of nature and the drifts of power. During their adventure, the hero duo, Pazu and Sheeta, discover that to fulfill their destiny means making sacrifices, even the most unexpected.

The Howl's Moving Castle

The motif of the fabulous castle which moves like an island floating in the air has returned to the center of a new story even more incredible than the previous one. A love story against a backdrop of rivalry between wizards, Le Château ambulant explores the theme of beauty and youth, through the gaze of her heroine Sophie, transformed into a little old woman whom the chosen one barely looks at. Between aerial acrobatics and time jumps, this improbable tale refers in particular to the Wizard of Oz and proves to be just as charming, with this little extra taste, bittersweet, specific to the productions of Studio Ghibli.

The Tales of Terremer

We could draw parallels between the tale of Terrer's Tales and Hayao Miyazaki's relationship with Goro, his son who became a director of animated films after having failed to make a name for himself in town planning and landscaping. Combining elements invented by Miyazaki father for his manga Shuna's Journey to the adaptation of novels written by Ursula K. Le Guin, this film retraces the quest for identity of Prince Arren who seeks to restore the balance of the world after having killed his father. Just that ! Between epic on assertiveness and initiation journey.

The wind picks up

If you have not yet poured your teardrop in front of the first 4 films of this article, wait until you have seen the last before drawing conclusions about your heart of stone. Aimed at a rather adolescent audience, The wind rises is inspired by the real life of Jiro Horikoshi, an aeronautical engineer who modernized the Japanese bombers. The film chronicles the passage to adulthood of a young man caught in history, between the crisis of 1929 and the Second World War, and who also discovered love. Melancholic and intimate, this feature film without a hairy wizard or grotesque metamorphosis, is a concentrate of emotion.
