Recipe Ingredients and Notes

Strawberry and Banana Smoothie

To make this strawberry banana smoothie, you'll need the following ingredients (see ideas for variations later in this post!)

  • Strawberries: Fresh or frozen strawberries work well here. If you use fresh strawberries, you might just need to add ice to achieve your desired smoothie consistency.
  • Banana: The riper the better!
  • Other Fruit of Choice: I used pear and pineapple to round out the smoothie flavor.
  • Chia Seeds or Flax Seeds: Optional, for more protein and a thicker consistency.
  • Ice: As needed, to get the consistency you want.
  • Milk of Choice: Regular milk or any unsweetened plant based milk (like almond or coconut milk) would work well.

What Makes This Smoothie Healthy?

  • No Added Sugar: All the sugar you get is from the fruit itself. There isn't any processed or refined sugar in this strawberry banana smoothie recipe.
  • Fiber: If you are looking to increase your fiber intake, a homemade fruit smoothie is a wonderful way to do so. This strawberry banana smoothie recipe has 13 grams of fiber, and you can add even more by adding other ingredients.
  • Low Calorie: You can enjoy an entire smoothie for just 230 calories. Adding other ingredients will increase the calories, but using my recommendations, they are still low calorie.

Will Kids Enjoy This Strawberry and Banana Smoothie?

Yes, the blended fruit is so appealing to kids. They won't realize they are filling up on lots of healthy vitamins and minerals! It tastes like an incredible dessert instead of a healthy breakfast. My kids call it a strawberry ice cream milkshake!

For small kids, I recommend dividing this smoothie recipe into two servings - your child may not drink an entire smoothie because it is pretty filling.

Recipe FAQs

Can You Meal Prep Smoothies?

Absolutely! To meal prep this strawberry banana smoothie, add all of the fruit and seeds into an airtight freezer safe container or freezer bag, and pop it in the freezer. It will keep for up to 3 months. When you're ready to make the smoothie, pour all of the ingredients straight from your freezer into your blender! You won't need much ice because the fruit mixture will already be plenty icy.
Additionally, you can prepare the smoothie completely (except the ice) and add the smoothie to a jar or glass. Leave it in the fridge for up to 2 days. When ready to eat, blend with ice and enjoy!

How to Make Smoothies Thicker

The easiest way to make a thick and creamy smoothie is to use frozen fruit instead of fresh fruit. You can even take fresh fruit, freeze it, and then use it in your smoothie! Other ways you can make this strawberry and banana smoothie thick are: adding Greek Yogurt, adding nuts/nut butter or seeds, or adding protein powder.

Can I Add Sweetener?

You can add sweetener (like honey, agave, or maple syrup) but I'd encourage you to try this without any added sweeteners because the fruit in this smoothie is so naturally sweet! If you do choose to add a sweetener, it'll be more like a dessert shake than a healthy breakfast!

Smoothie Recipe Variations

While you can certainly enjoy this strawberry banana smoothie on its own, there are so many ways to mix it up! Here are some of our favorites:

  • Greens: Add in baby spinach! It's super mild and takes on the flavor of the smoothie, and adds in tons of extra nutrients.
  • Greek yogurt: You can add 1/2 cup to 1 cup of plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt for even more creaminess and a healthy dose of protein.
  • Protein Powder: To boost the protein, and for an even creamier texture, try adding in one of these protein powders to this smoothie.
  • Different Fruit: While I added pear and pineapple to this smoothie recipe, just about any fruit would work great! Try blueberries, raspberries, apples, or mangoes!
  • Seeds: 1-2 tablespoons of chia seeds, flax seeds or even hemp seeds add healthy fats and protein to this strawberry banana smoothie.
  • Milk: You can use 1% organic milk, or any unsweetned plant milk (almond, soy, coconut) - anywhere from 1/2 cup to 1 cup.
  • Nut Butters: 1 tablespoon of peanut or almond butter makes this taste like a PB&J smoothie! It also adds protein and healthy fats.
  • Avocado:For adding healthy fats and for making this strawberry smoothie recipe super thick (like a milkshake). It's also great for kids (if you're making this recipe for little ones)
  • Silken Tofu: For added protein and creaminess while keeping this smoothie plant based!

Top Tips For Making This Strawberry and Banana Smoothie

  • Keep in mind you can use frozen or fresh fruit depending on what you have on hand. They both work well, but when using frozen, you may not need any ice cubes.
  • Mix in some nut butter, like almond, cashew, or creamy peanut butter to add some healthy fats, proteins, and flavor.
  • Using a high-quality blender is vital to ensuring that the ingredients actually get smooth and creamy instead of chunky.
  • If you use baby spinach, it will change the color of this strawberry and banana smoothie, but you won't be able to taste it at all.
  • To make this smoothie even quicker, store the ingredients in individual servings in the freezer along with your favorite add ins for a quick snack on the go!
