Strange Wine by Harlan Ellison

By Pamelascott

You will discover among these tales the spirits of executed Nazi war criminals who walk Manhattan streets; the ghost of a nagging Jewish mother; the damned soul of a murderess escaped from Hell; gremlins writing fantasies for a gone-dry writer; The Shadow; the exquisite Dr D'argueAngel, who deals her patients doses of death. Oh yeah, and Charles Manson.

Beneath the city, there is yet another city; wet and dark and strange, a city of sewers and moist scuttling creatures and running rivers so desperate to be free not even Styx fits them.

I've read Strange Wine once when I bought it many years ago. I bought it as it's recommended by Stephen King in his non-fiction book, Danse Macabre. I enjoyed all of the stories and it was a lot of fun to revisit this book. I've never read anything else by the author and I really should. Some of the best stories are Croatoan, In Fear Of K, Hitler Painted Roses, Lonely Women Are The Vessels Of Time and The New York Review Of Bird.
