Stop Your Dog from Sidewalk Tempation

Do you get frustrated when you walk your puppy and you have to constantly direct his head away from the ground? Does your pup enjoy finding unhealthy and unsanitized stuff like cigarette butts, used chewing gum, and even other dog vomit equally? If so, it’s time for you to stop your pup from straying.

Keep in mind that puppies at this age are enjoying the full development of their senses. And their strongest sense is smell so they get easily attracted to stinky items.

To help you curb this unseeming habit of your pup, here are ways to stop your dog from sidewalk temptation.

  • Always bring along a toy (a squeaky one is ideal) to distract him from the “bad” stuff he sees while walking.
  • Avoid places where leftover foods and/or garbage is prevalent such as a street of restaurants.
  • Bring him his favorite treats to tempt him away from the trash.
  • Work on a command that will teach your dog to NOT to sniff bad stuff on the street.

Yes, please.

If your puppy does get into something, it’s imperative to get it out of his mouth as much as possible and IF you can. You may want to teach your pup the “Drop it!” command and be ready to stick your hand in his mouth if he doesn’t drop it immediately. But before doing this, make sure that you practice getting your pup used to your hands in his mouth to avoid accidents like biting. If your pup swallows the stuff faster than you can give the command, try not to be worry too much. Rather,  look for any signs of illness later such as diarrhea, vomiting, fever, or lethargy and take him to the vet if these show up.
