The Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa requested the government not to increase the electricity tariffs once again as proposed.
Premadasa made this request in parliament yesterday (1) during the committee stage debate on several expenditure heads of ministries and related entities including the Education Ministry and the Women and Child Affairs Ministry.
Premadasa said that if the government is “humane” it would not take such a decision as people are already suppressed by the increased utility bills in the midst of high cost of living.
“How can people meet these expenses? People are suffering from this economic crisis. They cannot even cover their daily meals. In a situation like this, the government is planning to increase the utility tariff once again. Stop this move immediately. If the government is humane enough, it should stop this immediately.” the Opposition Leader said.
