Stilt World 1

stilt houses along the fly river

Kiunga, Western Province, Papua New Guinea / November 2013: Having a field day photographing houses on stilts along the Fly River.  On ordinary days — that is when the river water is high — only the topmost floor, less than half of these structures can be seen protruding above the dark waters.  But today I was literally walking under the stilts, as if I was among Moses’ tribe when they were walking on dry land across the parted Jordan River.   This short series illustrates the high structures that help this community live a life above the deep, treacherous waters of the Fly River for most of the year.
