The CEO of Ubisoft, Yves Guillemot, recently spoke at length on the company’s use of blockchain technology and “Web3 capabilities” while acknowledging that it is “still in research mode.”

He claimed that although the French gaming company is investigating a variety of new technologies, such as Web3 and cloud computing, it is still “testing ground” to determine whether these innovations “really answer the players’ needs.”

Guillemot also admitted that the company’s recent NFT offerings (so far, only Ghost Recon Breakpoint) are still in their early stages: “We probably were not good at saying we are researching […] We should have said we were working on it, and when we have something that gives you a real benefit, we’ll bring it to you.”

The CEO says that Ubisoft was one of the first companies to use new technologies like virtual reality and blockchain because there isn’t much competition right now and people like to try new things.

“Exploring doesn’t mean launching,” says Guillemot. “This industry is evolving quickly, and it’s very cautious about the impact it will have. Like so many things, at the beginning, it’s not as good as it could be, but like other new technologies, they will find the right way.”

Ubisoft hired Tezos earlier this year to add NFTs to its last Ghost Recon game. Gamers had different reactions to the news. Many tweeted the company to say they were uninstalling Ubisoft software because they were worried about the environment or thought the company was promoting pay-to-win business models.

On YouTube, the company’s NFT pivot did not do any better; the announcement video for its AAA game NFT platform, Ubisoft Quartz, was removed after receiving more than 95% dislikes.

Despite the criticism, Guillemot is quick to emphasize that Tezos is being used by Ubisoft specifically because its proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchain is more environmentally friendly than the ones currently provided by market giants Bitcoin and Ethereum.

The Ubisoft chief claimed that Tezos “has a lower energy consumption per transaction than sending emails: one standard email equals 4g Co² while a transaction on Tezos equals 2,5g Co².”

The business made an investment in Cross The Ages, a collectible card game powered by blockchain, in March. Additionally, Ubisoft has purchased property in The Sandbox, Pixowl’s Ethereum-based metaverse.

The Quartz project will be extended to upcoming titles, according to an announcement made by Ubisoft the following month that it was discontinuing NFT support for Ghost Recon Breakpoint.
