Police Special Task Force (STF) detected over 142 kilos of cannabis while being transported to Colombo from Hambegamuwa in Panamure on Tuesday night.

The cab used to transport the cannabis has also been taken into custody along with two suspects.

The STF had made this raid on a tip-off received while the suspects were transporting this cannabis to sell to a drug smuggler in Colombo.

Of the arrested, a 46-year-old person has been identified as the main suspect who is maintaining an illegal cannabis cultivation in the Hambegamuwa forest Reserve, police said. The other suspect is 32 years old.

The suspects were to sell a kilogram of this cannabis at Rs.50,000 to the buyer, STF said.

They have been handed over to the Panamura Police for further investigations.

The demand for local cannabis has gone up these days due to the continuous raids carried out by the Sri Lanka Navy preventing cannabis reaching the country via sea routes.
