Stern action will be taken against Police officers if they are found to have deliberately assaulted journalists covering the tense situation in Mirihana on Thursday night, Senior Police Media Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said.
Speaking to the media at the Department of Government Information yesterday, he said the Police Department had not instructed any officer to assault journalists, thus disturbing their duties.
“Police have no intention to hinder the duties of journalists even during such a violent situation,” he said. The Senior DIG was answering questions on the claim that several journalists who were at the scene had been arrested and severely assaulted inside the Mirihana Police Station early on Friday morning.
