In May 2014, the NHTSA released statistics showing that there were more than 333,000 accidents involving a commercial truck in 2012. Those accidents caused injuries to more than 100,000 people and led to nearly 4,000 fatalities—meaning that more than 10 people were killed in a truck crash every single day. Of those people who suffered a fatality, more than 80% were individuals who were NOT in the commercial truck at the time of the accident. What is worse is that the number has been steadily rising since 2009.
In this infographic, Arnold & Itkin LLP breaks down the statistics to show which states had the most fatal truck accidents that year. The number one culprit for fatal accidents? Texas, with more than 540 largetrucks involving in a fatal accident. That is more than twice the number of fatal accidents of the second place state, California, which saw 244. These rankings have held mostly consistent over the last decade. In 2003, Texas still had the most large trucks involved in fatal accidents although that year, the number was lower at 419. This is not surprising, however, as Texas is one of the most populated states in the entire country.
