Starwood is offering a special discount of up to 25-percent for purchase of Starwood Points.
The discount works as follows:
- 500-4,500 Starpoints – no discount
- 5,000-12,500 Starpoints – 20-percent discount
- 13,000-20,000 Starpoints – 25-percent discount.
Obviously, Starpoints have to be purchased in 500 Point increments, and a maximum that can be purchased through this discount promotion is 20,000 Starpoints.
The offer ends on Dec. 13, 2013.
The usual cost of Starwood Point is US$ 3.5 cents, which would mean 20,000 Starpoints will cost $700, but with the 25-percent discount, it will come to $525.
Comments:
Starwood Preferred Guest used to be one of the best loyalty points systems out there. I personally have enjoyed many stays at Sheraton, including the Sheraton Chola (now called My Fortune Hotel) in Chennai, India, using the points. But over the years, the value has been downgraded.
At the moment, 20,000 Starpoints will get you generally a two-night stay in a Category 4 Hotel in North America. In Canada, hotels such as the Westin Harbor Castle and Sheraton Center in Toronto, and Sheraton Wall Center in Vancouver fall under this category. (Click here for the full listing of Starwood hotels and their ratings).
But you may want to convert the Starpoints to eligible airline miles program to get the maximum. Check for airlines points that allow a 1=1 conversion, sometimes with a bonus.
