The interpreter of Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars saga recently explained why the first scene of introduction of his character in episode IV (finally cut in the editing) was very important.
Lucasfilm Ltd. On the occasion ofa podcast organized by the Russo brothers, the legendary interpreter of Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars saga returned to the original film from 1977, and to a very particular sequence that the spectators were never able to discover in theaters.
Now available on Disney + among the bonuses of A new hope, these images cut during the editing indeed constituted the introduction of Luke in the feature film. We could see the young farmer scanning the sky with a pair of binoculars and witnessing from far away the capture of Tantive IV by Vader's forces (the first scene in the film). Luke then joined his friends at Tosche station and had a long chat with Biggs Darklighter, his childhood friend returning from the Academy.
"There are several things that are good for the character", explained Mark Hamill in describing the scene. "First, he is openly ridiculed by his comrades. So he is not particularly cool or popular. Koo Stark, who is the only other actress in the film, calls me Wormie [ndlr : en français, petit ver ou vermisseau]. (...) Then I come across Biggs Darklighter, played by Garrick Hagon. "
Wearing an Empire uniform to Luke's admiration, Biggs privately explained to him that he wanted to desert the imperial troops to join the Rebel Alliance.
"The only reason I find this scene interesting is that Luke has no political beliefs"continues Mark Hamill. "He thinks it's great to join the Empire! Luke wants to join the Empire if it allows him to leave the farm! So he's totally pure in the sense that he isn't motivated by any form of politics . "
This sequence is part of the 6 cut scenes ofepisode IV, now available in the bonus part of the feature film on Disney +.
